“I chose clay because I can freely tackle this material without feeling apprehensive. Nothing is definitive.
It allows me to work calmly, to indulge in and share my feelings. For, beyond a face, a silhouette, emotion above all prevails. Each move, each stroke with my tool is executed that way.
In the end, I can easily forget the shape and be transported by what I am living only. I use the Raku technique, a Japanese technique.
I create each piece by hand then leave them to dry for about a day and a half in order to obtain a “simulated leather” texture. Then I work on details with a metal or wooden chisel and leave the pieces to dry for ten days. Later, I proceed a first baking for eight hours at a temperature of 980oC. This bake called “biscuit” or “smart” requires a lot of attention for I must be present during these eight hours to manually control the temperature of the kiln. Then the pieces are glazed or coated and baked a second time for one hour at a temperature of 1020oC. Even at that temperature, I open the kiln, extract the pieces and smoke them using wood chips inside metal containers. The pieces come out black, then the fastidious cleaning process starts. The smell of smoke on the pieces can last for about ten days.
Training In order to master the Raku technique I achieved the following :
Advanced Vocational Training Certificate in ceramics from ENSAAMA, Olivier de Serres’ high school of applied Art, Paris.
Vocational Training with modeler Antonin Gasq, at the workshop ‘les couronnes’, Paris.
Vocational Training with ceramist Nathalie Derouet, working on porcelain from Douarnenez.
Vocational Training with ceramist Véronique Duchemin, working on stoneware from La Gacilly.
